“In this recordings. we find traces of my first musical training in the Italian band tradition up tu experiences in the international arena. To embody the band tradition here are the musicians of the Italian Army Band, with its director, Maestro Filippo Cangiamila.” – ENZO TURRIZIANI

This album combines different experiences. Here the protagonist is the trombone: its versatility enables it to embrace a varied repertoire, with original compositions and arrangements that enhance its great ability to sing and its virtuosic potential. Derek Bourgeois’ concert, full of colors and fast passages, was the most compel- ling challenge of this album. Downtown Diversions – brilliant, elegant, light – takes us into a different atmosphere. This is followed by my interpretation of Nikolaj Rimsky-Korsakov’s concerto, one of the most authoritative pieces for trombone. The Elegy, from the pen of Filippo Cangiamila as an exercise for trombone, turns out to be a beautiful melody, skillfully orchestrated. The variations on the Sonnambula are… the “made in Italy” brand!

So in this recording, we find traces of my first musical training in the Italian band tradition up to experiences in the international arena. To embody the band tradition here are the musicians of the Italian Army Band, with its director, Maestro Filippo Cangiamila.

Banda musicale dell'Esercito Italiano

A wind ensemble made up of 102 members, wearing a glorious uniform, symbol of the oldest armed force in Italy. Several major international institutions have been welcomed by the military band, including the main Italian and foreign Heads of State and Ministers. Receiving enthusiastic acclam, the ensemble’s notes have resounded on many national and foreign stages. Founded in 1964 and led previously by A. Lacerenza, M. Bartoloni and F. Creux, its members are graduates from the most important musical institutions and are recruited through a selective national competition. The group’s vast repertoire ranges from celebra- tory pieces to contemporary pieces, with a particular fondness for original band music. It was the first armed forces musical ensemble in Italy to welcome guest conductors on the podium – most notably Riccardo Muti – and has collaborated with world-famous musicians, also dedicating itself to a varied record production. Since 2019 it has been directed by maestro Filippo Cangiamila.

Filippo Cangiamila

As a child, thanks to his father and almost for fun, the trombone enters his life: thusbegins the passion for this instrument which leads him to acquire a diploma at a young age and to win auditions to collaborate with important theaters and orche- stras. At the same time he obtains diplomas in band instrumentation, orchestra conducting and composition. Attracted by contemporary music, he performs in the presence of famous composers and establishes himself as a composer in important international competitions. He then dons a uniform, holding the role of eupho- nium in the Financial Guard Band and that of assistant director in the Penitentiary Police Band until 2019, when he becomes Director of the Army Band. As founder of the Italian Brass Band, he held the role of artistic and musical director until 2022, leading the ensemble to win seven international awards. He has many publications to his credit and is often invited as a jury member, conductor and teacher.
